What age of horse wins most?

UK & Irish racing · 2015–2026 · updated 26 June 2026

It depends entirely on the code. The Flat is a young horse's game — 71% of all winners are aged two to four, and it peaks sharply at 3 years old. Jumping rewards maturity and durability: winners peak at 6, with the prime years stretching from five to eight.

Why the gap?

Flat horses mature early and the calendar is built for them young — two-year-old races, three-year-old Classics — and many of the best are retired to stud before they turn five. Jumpers are bred for size and stamina, take years to fill their frames and learn to jump, and race on into double figures. A six-year-old is a veteran on the Flat and barely getting going over fences.

Method. Share of UK & Irish winners by age, 2015–2026. "Flat" is races run from starting stalls (a recorded draw); "Jumps" covers the rest (hurdles, chases and National Hunt flat). Past results don't guarantee the future. 18+ · BeGambleAware.
